Jeremy Newmark is appointed first ever full-time chief executive of the JLC, having previously worked for six years as communications director for Chief Rabbi Sacks
● SEPTEMBER
2013 Mr Newmark attends a meeting at which a report into his conduct is discussed – tendering his resignation on the grounds of his ill health on September 30
● OCTOBER 2, 2013
JLC announces that Mr Newmark is standing down on health grounds
● FEBRUARY 2016
Mr Newmark is elected chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, succeeding MP Louise Ellman
● MAY 2017
Mr Newmark is selected as the Labour general election candidate for Finchley and Golders Green.
His selection to stand against Mike Freer — deemed to be a strong supporter of the Jewish community — is greeted with a mixture of anger and approval
● JUNE 2017
Mr Newmark narrowly fails to win the constituency from the Conservatives, winning 22,942 votes to Mr Freer’s, 24,599, but reducing the MP’s majority by more than 4,000
● OCTOBER 2017
Mr Newmark is elected as a local councillor for the Borehamwood Kenilworth ward on Hertsmere Borough Council – a result praised as “fantastic” by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn
