Moss sends Scrabble through

-

FOOTBALL A late strike from Steven Moss earned Scrabble a place in the final of the Henry Swerner Cup as they eliminated defending league champions North London Raiders.

Led by Jon Yantin, Scrabble forged ahead when a six-man move was rounded off by Lee Levenson.

NLR were denied by the woodwork twice but they remained patient and equalised via a close-range header from striker Alex Bourne. Scrabble continued to push forward and they were rewarded when Moss fired home. Goalkeeper Elliot Gordon sealed the win with a last-ditch save in one of the surprise results of the MMFL season.

Scrabble player-manager Jon Yantin remarked: “It was a confident performance and superb effort across the team, prompted by Nigel Goldthorpe who led brilliantly as captain and Andy Binstock was Harry Kane-esque in attack. It’s a fantastic achievement to reach a cup final for the first time.”

Scrabble await the winner of the other semi-final between Chigwell Athletic and Maccabi London Lions ahead of the final on April 26 at Rowley Lane.

Lions B cruised into the final of the Nathan Horwitz Division Two Cup at the expense of St John’s Wood Tigers, with goals from Gideon Barnett (3), Craig Henry (2) and Danny Schindler clinching a 6-1 win. Steve Gold pulled one back for the Tigers. Lions await the winner of the second semi-final, between Marshside and EHRS Stonegrove.

EHRS extended their lead at the top of MMFL Division Two with a 7-1 win over Temple Fortune. Martin Seifert (3), Adam Kern (2), John Dubiner and Ashley Davidson clinched the points. Dean Ingram replied for Fortune.
