Shirley turn on style at Northern Metropolit­an

GOLF Shirley Golf Club won the top prize at the Northern Metropolit­an in Manchester.

They collected the Lord Bellwin Trophy for the best men’s and ladies’ combined aggregate nett score in a competitio­n held at Whitefield Golf Club, with the host club claiming the combined aggregate nett runners-up slot.

The season of events organised by the Associatio­n of Jewish Golf Clubs & Societies moved into the busy summer segment. The competitor­s benefited from a warm summer’s day and played under clear blue skies with little wind, but the course offered a stern test.

In the Ladies’ event, the prizes were dominated by Shirley and Moor Allerton. Marilynne Jackson of Moor Allerton returned the best singles gross and nett scores while Vicki Pinnick of Shirley secured the singles nett title, as well as runner-up in the gross event.

Shirley also collected the prize the for the best nett team, with Whitefield finishing runners-up.

The honours were shared in the men’s competitio­n with Moor Allerton winning the best team nett after edging Whitefield into second place.

Mike Sheldon of Whitefield produced the best round of the day with a fantastic score of 71 to claim the singles gross. Anthony Harris of Whitefield was runner-up in the gross. Alan Tobias of Moor Allerton returned a 63 after deduction of handicap to claim the best nett in a tournament that promotes mixed representa­tion of the participan­ts.
