LEXUS’S FIRST seven-seat model in Europe — the RX450hL — arrives at Lexus Edgware Road this summer. By extending the length of the RX by a mere 110mm, Lexus has created room for two extra thirdrow seats. Price on the road is from £50,995 for the new model, which shares the smooth, efficient and reliable self-charging hybrid powertrain of the fourth generation five-seater RX.

With all the comfort and luxury of Lexus, such as tri-zone climate control and leather upholstery as standard, the RX 450hL’s power-folding third row gives you additional flexibility.

The revised body is extended from the rear axle, so the third row is just as comfy as the other seats; the additional seats have good head- and leg-room and are easy to access, with the second row slightly higher than the third.

The seven-seat delivers the flexibility the modern family needs — for instance when transporting your children’s friends, or grandparents. The larger rear also provides extra load space, perfect for holidaying or day trips.

The RX 450hL retains its elegant design, coupé-like profile and exemplary driving dynamics. Its 3.5-litre direct-injection V6 petrol engine has a maximum output of 259bhp/193 kW at 6,000 rpm with 335Nm of torque at 4,600rpm. The total output of the hybrid powertrain (engine and electric motors combined) amounts to 308bhp/230 kW. Combined cycle fuel economy is from 47.9mpg with CO2 emissions from 136 g/km.

Just like its RX sibling, the RX L is fitted with the highest level of safety features including the Lexus Safety System+. This incorporates the Lexus pre-collision system, which uses a front-mounted camera and millimetre-wave radar to detect vehicles and pedestrians on the road ahead. If the system calculates that you are at risk of a collision, it warns the driver and provides extra braking force the moment the brake pedal is pressed. If the driver fails to react and the system judges a collision to be imminent, the brakes are automatically applied and the seatbelts are tensioned.

Adaptive cruise control helps you maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, while lane-keep assist helps the vehicle stay in lane. The car also detects oncoming traffic and switches lights between high and low beam. On higher grades, additions include a blind spot monitor with panoramic view and intelligent parking sensors.

When the RX 400h launched in 2005, it introduced the self-charging hybrid system to the premium car market. Since then, more than 2.7 million models have been sold worldwide and the new RX L will further strengthen its position as it meets the requirements of modern families in the premium car market.
