‘Reform has shaped our lives’

- BY JC REPORTER

FOR LABOUR MP Luciana Berger, a fond childhood recollection was winning a Kit Kat for memorising the Amidah at Middlesex New Synagogue in Harrow (now Mosaic Reform). For Tory Andrew Percy, there was appreciation of the warm and welcoming attitude he had experienced on converting to Judaism — and admiration for the contribution of converts to Hull Reform community, of which he is a member.

The MPs’ discussion was the centrepiece of the Reform Judaism annual dinner, held at London’s Grand Connaught Rooms and attended by more than 200 supporters.

Although differing in their responses to the question of how Brexit will be talked about at Shabbat dinner tables in ten years’ time, the two found common ground on the importance of Reform Judaism’s egalitarian values. Ms Berger also noted the benefits of her involvement in the movement’s youth arm, RSY-Netzer.

Discussing concerns over antisemitism, Ms Berger said it was “a fight for us all” and a strong indication of the challenges facing wider society. Echoing her sentiments, Mr Percy stressed the need for moderates to work together, adding that “Britain is a good country for Jews”.

Community members from diverse backgrounds gave moving testimonies on the impact Reform Judaism has made on their lives.

health. “Yet RSY-Netzer have always made sure that I was included and made an effort to understand and support me.

“I was able to happily participate at camp, go on Israel tour and more recently I was able to lead on camp. Being part of this Reform Jewish community has pushed me to be the best version of myself.”

Newcastle Reform chair Linda Scott said that, although her shul enjoyed a high level of engagement from members, “our community could not survive without continued input and support from Reform Judaism. Reform Judaism is the root of all our communities large and small, from which we can grow and continue to thrive. It is our network, our family, our parent, our teacher, our guide and inspiration.”
