The hidden curriculum that leads to happiness

- BY AMANDA DONNELLY

EVERY CHILD deserves a childhood. If we allow childhood to become an afterthought, we are not setting a solid foundation for our children’s future. Children have a right to happiness and that can happen only if we embrace childhood and allow our children freedom to discover who they are, rather than launching them on a predestined route to adulthood.

I believe there are two curricula, each of equal importance; the academic curriculum based on good-quality teaching and learning, measured in academic success, and the hidden curriculum, embedded in everything we do, delivered to enhance character, creativity, motivation, curiosity, thinking, communication, collaboration, resilience and wellbeing, modelled by teachers and everyone in the school environment who touch our children’s lives.

A balanced curriculum allows pupils to develop into resilient, mindful and confident young adults. We should strive to inspire children to uncover their true strength, on the sports field; in the accomplishment of an instrument; through their own creative interpretation or by harnessing a passion for drama. At Manor Lodge, our Woodland Garden, Forest Garden and Japanese Garden represent a commitment to Creative thinking at Manor Lodge

educating the whole child. Each area creates learning experiences that promote wellbeing, allow children to experience the happiness of childhood and help create positive mindsets and memories that will last a lifetime. Our curriculum has an emphasis on Stem subjects, to equip children for the changing world. Both boys and girls thrive on the challenges these subjects promote.

My passion and love of Manor Lodge is mirrored by the staff themselves. Their ideas and philosophies are the cornerstone of our curriculum and the voice of our future. I cannot wait to unharness their enthusiasm.

Amanda Donnelly is head teacher of Manor Lodge School
