Two triumphs for determined MS fundraisers

-

AIMS2CURE IS celebrating its 20th birthday in 2019, not long after having reached the £1 million fundraising milestone — both proud and exciting moments for this small charity. Aims2Cure, run solely by 12 volunteers, funds research into finding a cure for multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a chronic, lifelong neurological condition involving damage to the sheaths of nerve cells in the brain and/or spinal cord. This can result in serious disability.

MS affects more than 100,000 people in the UK and most commonly strikes those in their 20s and 30s, although it can develop at any age.

Through its Michele Elster Fund, Aims2Cure also help to improve the quality of life of those living with the condition.

Tragically Michele lost her battle with MS more than 10 years ago and a fund was established in her memory. Over the past 20 years, the fund has purchased equipment and adapted homes to increase accessibility.

The charity is also involved in supporting several MS therapy centres in the UK, funding the salary of physiotherapists and purchasing muchneeded equipment.

Aims2Cure’s fundraising appeals to a wide audience. From poker tournaments to bridge competitions, from London-to-Brighton indoor cycling challenges (where participants ride the equivalent distance on a spin bike) to Icelandic treks, or even a hilarious and heartwarming evening with the wonderful Judge Rinder, it is motivated and passionate to find a cure for this debilitating disease.

Aims2Cure has also inspired the younger generation to raise money Aims2Cure’s stand at the Maccabi GB Community Fun Run

for the charity and to raise awareness of MS and of the charity. Braid bars and street stalls, run by Junior Aims, have proved very successful.

Additionally, each year a group of young people, from toddlers through to teens, takes part in the Maccabi GB Community Fun Run for Aims2Cure.

The next generation of fundraisers

for this charity is in training to continue the good work started back in 1999.

In the build-up to this 20th year, Aims2Cure undertook to hold 20 events in 20 months and by the time you read this, it will have achieved its goal. It is also committed to supporting 20 different MS centres nationally by the end of 2019.

There is no stopping this charity. It is determined and committed, not only to raising much-needed funds but also to increasing awareness of MS and its prevalence in the wider community.
