South Manchester chief picks his perfect pack

South Manchester Sports Club chairman Jonny Davis - a one-club man who played for the team from 1964 until 1993 - reveals his best XI his has played with to Danny Caro

BOB FRAIS – Maccabiah goalkeeper, nicknamed ‘Pretty boy’. Wonderful shot-stopper.

DANNY HERMAN – gold medallist at the Maccabiah for 100m sprint, also ran against the great Bob Hayes for Great Britain at White City. Used to take Manchester City squad, including Bell,

Lee and Summerby, for sprint training at Wythenshaw­e Park.

Strong as an ox and incredibly fast. No-one could catch him. JONNY MORRIS – was on the books at Crystal Palace. Incredible talent with a great left foot. HAROLD WOOLF – born in Ireland, played rugby union for Sale, joined South Manchester from Waterpark, the best team in Manchester. He was a colossus, a brick wall.

DANNY BETESH – one of the kings of the entertainm­ent world, was the Don Revie of the team. Was the granddad of the team, never let anyone down. Represente­d the club for many years.

DAVID TUSSIE – born in Argentina, had a trial with Maccabi GB for the Maccabiah. Was not selected and ended up playing for Australia. Nicknamed the Wizard. Fantastic winger, fast, very skilful and knew where the goal was.

DAVID DAVIS – brother of Jonny, tigerish tackler. Rarely lost a 50/50. Very tough and kept the referees very busy. NEIL COLLINS – Great captain, excellent manager and as hard as they come.

SIMON DEUTSCH – could’ve played left-back, left-midfield or left-wing. Very strong and fast, with a tremendous shot. Oozed star quality wherever he played

GREG DAVIS – employed as an administra­tor for Barcelona. Very clever player at outside left, always a step ahead of the rest. ANTHONY DAVIS – brother of Jonny, top-scorer most seasons, knew where the net was. Only blemish was a penalty miss in the last minute of a cup final.
