Creattve sats on for Etgar 2020

V THIS YEAR’S Etgar Challenge is to go ahead online, organisers confirmed this week.

In past years, the inter-school contest has drawn 1,000 year-fives to Wembley Stadium from Jewish schools across the country.

But with most primary classes still not scheduled to return to school, the Etgar team have developed a digital version instead.

It will run live at 11 am on July 2 via

Etgar’s YouTube channel. “Etgar 2020 will have a character all its own. There will still be plenty of fun and celebration of the children’s achievement after a very difficult few months”, the team says.

Not only will children be quizzed on their knowledge of the Etgar Handbook, there are a couple of creative challenges as well, which were set this week.

In the first, children are being asked to create Israel’s entry to the Venice Biennale arts festival — a painting, sculpture or even an edible creation such as a cake.

In the second, they must imagine

David Ben Gurion visiting the country now and recording his impressions in a diary.

“In both challenges we are looking for creativity as well as a piece that displays knowledge and celebration of Israel,” the organisers say. “The standard of the creative challenges is always excellent, and this year we’re very much looking forward to seeing what the children dream up”.
