Wedding dispersed by Herts police
V A LARGE strictly Orthodox wedding which took place last week in Elstree, Hertfordshire was broken up by police. Hertfordshire Police confirmed that officers attended a warehouse in Elstree alongside colleagues from Hertsmere Borough Council’s environmental health team, after a tip-off.
A spokesperson told the JC: “Due to breaches of coronavirus regulations, those inside were requested to leave and did so without incident.” Followup investigations are now being carried out. “We understand that people may be frustrated with the regulations but coronavirus is still a serious risk to health. Everyone must adhere to government guidance to help mitigate the transmission of the virus.”
Videos and photos from the event, circulated by Yid Info, show police entering the wedding, which appeared to take place in a large warehouse in Lismirrane Industrial Park. One image shows the married couple posing in front of a police car.
According to government guidance, weddings of a maximum of 30 people (including bride and groom) may take place from this Saturday and all parties should adhere to social distancing.
In one video, the wedding band can be heard singing: “In 30 minutes in Bobov Hall” in Yiddish while police were present, in reference to Bobov Hall in Egerton Road, Stamford Hill. A Met Police spokesperson told the JC they had no trace of any further gatherings having taken place, so whether the wedding continued elsewhere is unknown.
