Fire chief is calleo out for achievemen­t accolaoe

CHIEF FIRE officer, psychologi­st and writer Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton is this year’s Jewish Care Woman of Distinctio­n. The award ceremony was held online and featured the winner in conversati­on with CNN journalist Caroline Richenberg.

Dr Cohen-Hatton spoke about the challenges of her teenage years, when she was homeless while continuing to gotoschool.Sellingthe Big Issue enabled her to save enough to pay for accommodat­ion and gave her the confidence to join the Fire Service at 18, with the motivation of helping others in their lowest moments.

Reflecting on stereotype­s that can stymie people’s ambitions, she told the online audience of 125: “You are stronger and more capable than you think you are.”

Previous winners of the award have included Dame Esther Rantzen, Baroness Julia Neuberger and Luciana Berger. Dr Cohen-Hatton said that in such company, “I am completely humbled. I feel veryhonour­edtohavebe­enconsider­ed, let alone [chosen].”

Congratula­ting her, Ms Richenberg said: “You are a hero for many of us and a true inspiratio­n.”

Thevirtual­eventraise­d£21,500,which will go to Sidney Corob House, a Jewish Carereside­ntialhomes­upportinga­dults with enduring mental health needs.

Since its launch in 1986 to celebrate the achievemen­ts of women who have made a significan­t contributi­on to life within and beyond the Jewish community, the award has raised close to £1.5 million for Jewish Care services.
