Fire chief is calleo out for achievement accolaoe
CHIEF FIRE officer, psychologist and writer Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton is this year’s Jewish Care Woman of Distinction. The award ceremony was held online and featured the winner in conversation with CNN journalist Caroline Richenberg.
Dr Cohen-Hatton spoke about the challenges of her teenage years, when she was homeless while continuing to gotoschool.Sellingthe Big Issue enabled her to save enough to pay for accommodation and gave her the confidence to join the Fire Service at 18, with the motivation of helping others in their lowest moments.
Reflecting on stereotypes that can stymie people’s ambitions, she told the online audience of 125: “You are stronger and more capable than you think you are.”

Previous winners of the award have included Dame Esther Rantzen, Baroness Julia Neuberger and Luciana Berger. Dr Cohen-Hatton said that in such company, “I am completely humbled. I feel veryhonouredtohavebeenconsidered, let alone [chosen].”
Congratulating her, Ms Richenberg said: “You are a hero for many of us and a true inspiration.”
Thevirtualeventraised£21,500,which will go to Sidney Corob House, a Jewish Careresidentialhomesupportingadults with enduring mental health needs.
Since its launch in 1986 to celebrate the achievements of women who have made a significant contribution to life within and beyond the Jewish community, the award has raised close to £1.5 million for Jewish Care services.
