Chief Rabbi supports votes for women in shul
Wife-swapping in Cheadle
A Manchester rabbi has made a plea to his members to “avoid” adultery and wife-swapping. In his newsletter addressed to members of the Yeshurun Synagogue “and all Jews in the Cheadle area” Rabbi Benjamin Rabinowitz said that he had dealt with the subjects of adultery and wife-swapping — hitherto taboo mong most of the Jewish community and certainly among the ministry — because he believed in expressing his views on any subject relevant to the times.
Women to get greater say
The Chief Rabbi, Dr I. Jakobovits, and the honorary officers of the United Synagogue, after consultation have issued a statement commending a proposed clause to amend the Scheme of the United Synagogue Act. The clause, which will be discussed at next Tuesday’s meeting of the council, is designed to give women a greater say in synagogue affairs. The joint statement says that the proposed clause—41 (c)—envisages that the general functions of a congregation in the spheres of education, youth, culture and other similar activities would be transferred from boards of management to new synagogue councils on which both male and female members would be eligible for election.
Antisemitic threats mystery in Dijon
The present wave of antisemitic incidents in France began on December 9, with the receipt of death threats by Rabbi Sabban and other leading members of the Dijon Jewish community. The so-called “Odessa” group has claimed responsibility for the threats in Dijon. No one has yet been arrested in the town. However, Nazi methods were used by young antisemites who appeared in Marseilles and Toulon wearing T-shirts with the words, “If you are hungry, put a Jew in the oven”.
