Joseph, 102, is ‘tickled pink’ by birthday celebrations

V JEWISH CARE resident Joseph Winton marked his 102nd birthday with a visit from his daughter Daniella at Lady Sarah Cohen House in Friern Barnet, where he has lived since 2017.

There were also Zoom get-togethers and cake with fellow residents and staff at the home.

His daughter said the visit had made him “tickled pink. It was a big comfort to us and he enjoyed every moment. All in all, my dad remains happy, healthy and positive, which is a testament to the incredible staff at Jewish Care who have kept him so well cared for and nurtured during this very difficult time.”

Mr Winton’s parents left Poland in 1920. His younger brother Jacques was born in Belgium and the two fled the country to escape the Nazis, hiding on a train for nine days.

Arriving in Toulouse, a Polish Army officer helped them board a ship — they had no idea of its destination. The ship docked in Plymouth and the brothers travelled to London, joining family in the East End.

Mr Winton served in the Royal Army Ordinance Corps, utilising his linguistic skills in German, French and Flemish to work in communications.

years, Ann was also a Lady Sarah Cohen House resident and Mr Winton visited her every day.

He has two children and three grandchildren.
