Lions stay top with 3-1 victory

IT’S AS you were at the top of the Maccabi Masters Football League table as the top two both won.

Maccabi London Lions maintained their 100 per cent winning start to the season as goals from Bradley Lazarus, Danny Reuben and Paul Lenchner saw them to a 3-1 win at St John’s Wood Tigers.

Maccabi London Brady remain three points behind them in second place, following a 6-0 win at Hendon Harriers. Laurence Beck scored twice, with strikes from Richard Sacks, Ashley Davidson, Kevin Lotzof and Tim Levene completing the rout.

Elsewhere, Glenthorne beat EHRS Stonegrove 4-2. Sid Shaw’s penalty, plus strikes from Lloyd Nygate, Richard Lester and Darren Coon sealing the win.

There was Tony Cohen Cup action in the Manchester Jewish Soccer League on Sunday morning, with two first-round first legs played. Reich lost their first game of the season against champions Haroldeans. Jack Bookey’s penalty along with strikes from Josh Roberts and Adam Shiffman seeing the Merseyside­rs to a 3-1 win. Over in Yorkshire, Saul Shapiro’s brace plus John Saffman’s strike saw Leeds Maccabi claim a 3-2 win over Maccabi Manchester 3rd. Both ties remain evenly poised ahead of the second legs.

There were 13 fixtures played in the Maccabi GB Junior Football League on Sunday. Reflecting back on the season so far, League Chairman Marc Levy said: “It’s started really well for all age categories. We’ve been delighted to see two new teams join us in recent weeks and add to the 250 players that play each weekend.

“We’re delighted to see so many players enjoying their football and we are already planning for a new under-11 age group for next season.”
