Clothes for the curvy
UNTIL QUITE recently, 6.2 million UK women and millions in the US and Europe who wear size 16 or above were labelled ‘plussize’ and excluded from much mainstream and most designer fashion. But fashion has slowly become more inclusive to curvy women.
As well as many collections having been extended to 16 and 18, sometimes this greater inclusivity means all products are offered in every size such as at US brand Universal Standard (2-40) and Reformation (4-28) which both ship to the UK. Some British brands, notably M&S, Boden and occasion-wear specialist Gina Bacconi, have been heroically and quietly inclusive for decades, offering fashion in sizes 6 to 22 or 24. Last month UK brand Next launched its Rochelle Humes collection with slip dresses, wideleg knit trousers and aviator coats, in sizes 6 to 22.
Mainstream brands becoming more inclusive include Zara (many more items in 16 and 18); Rixo (selected products, 16, 18 and 20); Jacquemus (most products 4-18). Lingerie brand Maison Lejaby which is “embracing plus sizes” while some designer labels including Erdem, Stella McCartney and Dolce & Gabbana, now offer 16s and 18s.
Also, there are still dedicated “Plus” collections such as Gerry Weber, Studio 8, Elvi, Evans, River Island Plus range and ASOS Curve.
For all women, including curvy ones, many factors, including body proportions and height, determine what styles, cuts, lengths, etc works best. A qualified image consultant (fipigroup.com) may help you discover what
