Heed back in action as Jarvis signs

-

GATESHEAD return to action eight weeks after lifting the Vanarama National League North title in a preseason friendly at Sunderland, writes JEFF BOWRON.

The Academy of Light clash is a 60-minute training ground affair with both clubs having had just a week back on the training ground.

The Tynesiders should have four new faces in their squad, with Wrexham midfielder Dan Jarvis having joined the club on a one-year deal with another year’s option.

A product of the Stoke City Academy, the Midlander turned down the chance to stay at wealthy National League title favourites Wrexham. Gateshead have been on the lookout for another midfielder after Jack Hunter and Danny Greenfield rejected new terms to link up with FC Halifax Town and Spennymoor Town.

Jarvis has arrived to join three other new signings – Lewis Knight, Tom Allan and Kenton Richardson – already at the International Stadium.

“There was an offer for another year for me at Wrexham,” said Jarvis, who was limited to five starts for the Welsh outfit last season.

“But at the end of the day, I had to look at my career and what good would it do me sitting on the bench, or maybe even in the stands, next year. I just thought it was better for me to move on and try and play some football.

“I want to be starting games not coming off the bench and regard myself as a creative midfielder who can make and score goals.”

The Lichfield-born playmaker believes Gateshead will be the perfect fit. He added: “The playing style was the main reason I’ve signed here. Good, attacking and exciting football, which I want to be part of.”

Gateshead remain in the hunt for experienced Harrogate Town forward Aaron Martin.
