Dad pens his first book inspired by beloved dog

- CATHERINE ADDISON-SWAN Reporter

ANEWCASTLE dad has published his first book all about a dog having adventures across the North East - inspired by his own beloved pet.

Tim Blackburn, 39, first had the idea to pen a picture book during the first Covid lockdowns in 2020 while reading to his baby son, now four.

He decided to make his dog Frank the star of the tale, depicting the 11-year-old shih tzu going on family outings in the local area - but finding himself unable to follow his owners into some of the region’s most famous attractions.

For Tim, who works at a pharmaceutical company, writing a book was a completely new venture - but after reading out extracts on family Zoom calls, he received high praise from his loved ones and was encouraged to try to get it published.

Fast forward to today, and Frank’s Hassle in Newcastle is now available to buy from Olympia Publishers.

The story begins with Frank getting quite a shock when his owners bring home their new baby.

After getting into mischief with the cat – inspired by Frank’s real-life best buddy Poco – Frank heads off on days out around the North East with his family. Visiting some of the region’s most beloved venues from Tynemouth Aquarium to St James’ Park and finding that there are no dogs allowed, Frank declares that it’s such a hassle living in Newcastle.

Other stop-offs on Frank and the family’s travels include the Angel of the North, Beamish, the beach and the Quayside so there are plenty of places for local readers to spot in the book.

After a dream day out - and a dramatic moment that we won’t spoil - Frank ultimately decides that living in Newcastle might not be such a hassle after all, especially with his new little brother in tow.

After seeing the bond between his dog and his son grow, Tim hopes to write more of Frank’s adventures with the family around the country. Until then, Frank’s Hassle in Newcastle is available from Olympia Publishers and major retailers.
