Cats youngster heads out on loan

- CLIVE YOULTON

SUNDERLAND teenager Zak Johnson has been loaned out to Dundalk FC for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old defender joins the Lilywhites with their new campaign in the League of Ireland Premier Division getting under way tomorrow evening.

Johnson recently returned from a loan spell with Hartlepool United where he made 11 appearances.

He will now link up with Stephen O’Donnell’s side ahead of their first game of the season against Shamrock Rovers.

Academy manager Robin Nicholls said: “This is an exciting move for Zak and gives him the chance to challenge himself at a good level of football, following a year in which he has experienced international football as well as playing in the National League for Hartlepool, the EFL Cup for our first team, and a variety of competitions with our U21s.

“Our discussions with Dundalk FC have been very positive and they delivered excellently on the role Zak would play in their system. It is a good test for Zak to operate in a team who have high ambitions.”

Meanwhile, aspiring goalkeepers might want to give it a go at Sunderland AFC.

The women’s team are recruiting in the specialist position for their academy pyramid.

Training days will be available for players between the ages of 10 and 18. The dates are as follows: Tuesday February 27 – U10-U12 (7-8pm), U13-U15 (8-9pm); Friday, March 1 – U16-18 (7-8pm)

Training sessions will be held at the Academy of Light, and you can register your interest on the club’s website. All players must live within one hour 30 minutes’ travel time of the AoL.
