-

A car flipped on to its roof after the driver lost control and smashed into a home.

Christine Elliott was in bed yesterday when she hard a loud thud. The 63-yearold found that a black Mercedes car had crashed into the wall surrounding her bungalow in Wylam, Northumberland, and was upside down in the the road.

The incident occurred on Main Road near the Fox & Hounds pub at around 7.22am. The driver reportedly managed to escape without injury.

The road was closed for around an hour and 45 minutes while the emergency services dealt with the incident. Workers from Northumberland County Council cleared the road and put up a temporary fence around Christine’s home.

Christine, who has owned the property for more than 30 years, said she was was reassured by police that the driver was OK. The quantity surveyor estimator said: “I just heard the thud. The people next door must have called the police and the ambulance.

“The driver’s OK, the police said that he had to go to hospital. It’s just one of those things. He’s been a lucky man!”

Christine said she will need to make an insurance claim to get her wall repaired. She said: “I’m pleased the car didn’t go up the drive and I didn’t lose the end of my house.

“My car wasn’t on the drive at the time. I had been moving stone to the back so there was stone on the front drive. If I had had my car on the drive it would have hit the house. It could have been a lot worse for him and for us.”

Christine has praised the police, paramedics and Northumberland County Council for how swiftly they dealt with the incident. She said that it was “efficient” and “organised” and road was clear again by 10am.
