United-linked technical director will leave role at the Cherries
BOURNEMOUTH have confirmed that Newcastle United-linked Richard Hughes will leave the club at the end of the season.
The former Cherries player became technical director of the club back in 2016, but he will leave his role at the Vitality Stadium.
The announcement comes amid links to Newcastle following the exit of Dan Ashworth.
Ashworth is a target for Manchester United following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s takeover. He has been placed on gardening leave after telling Newcastle that he wants to complete a move to Old Trafford and the Magpies are demanding a significant compensation fee.
Hughes worked alongside Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during his time at Bournemouth but was one of the few staff members that did not follow Howe to St James’ Park.
In a statement on the club website, Hughes reflected on his time at the club.
“Working for AFC Bournemouth has always been a source of great joy and pride for me,” he said. “Initially representing the club as a player and then subsequently in a football leadership role, I count every moment I’ve spent here as a blessing.
“As technical director, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some of the most talented and dedicated individuals the game can offer. It’s been ten challenging, enjoyable and rewarding years in this post.
“The journey we have been on, as a club, is nothing short of remarkable. Where we are currently, on and off the pitch, assures me the future is bright.”
Hughes will leave his role at the Vitality Stadium at the end of the season. The reason for his departure is not disclosed in the club statement. The technical director has also been linked with a move to Liverpool.
