Chance to play part in creation of giant artwork
VISITORS to Cathedral can now take part in a unique opportunity to help create what promises to be a stunning giant artwork.
Those who visit the city landmark will be able to join in a mass-participation event which will result in a sculpture called Peace Dove, created from paper.
And this will be helping to spread a message of positivity.
Anyone can take part, simply by writing a note about peace, love, friendship and hope on a paper ‘peace dove’ there.
It is hoped that up to 15,000 paper birds will be made to add to a huge art installation that will go on show in July in what the cathedral describes as a unique chance to help create “something truly special”.
The Peace Doves installation is by artist Peter Walker and the idea is that the finished artwork, to be installed in the cathedral nave, will give people a sense of serenity and peace as they look up.
The birds fluttering overhead are set to create an immersive experience for those who visit during the summer months.
They will be illuminated and there will be music, by composer
David Harper, playing alongside the display.
Walker, the artist and sculptor behind it, has developed a similar artwork at other locations.
He is also artistic director of the Luxmuralis light show, which has also transformed the cathedral interior on separate occasions over the past two years.
The opportunity to make doves is available from now until July 20, then the finished Peace Doves will be installed in the nave on July 26 and will remain on show there until September 4.
In a message to visitors the cathedral said: “Each of the handmade paper doves will need to be created by members of the public, so we need your help to make this happen.”
There will be no charge to take part, nor to see the installation when it opens, although the cathedral always welcomes donations.
