Injury tally makes for painful reading
AFTER Saturday’s comeback against West Ham, the sobering realisation of yet more injury woes begins to hit home as Newcastle United prepare for the visit of Everton tonight.
Jamaal Lascelles, Miguel Almiron and Tino Livramento all limped off during the 4-3 victory at St James’ Park, with Anthony Gordon also seeing red in the closing stages.
Eddie Howe is once again down to the bare bones after a season dominated by injury problems.
With a behind-the-scenes inquest expected to take place in pre-season, Newcastle chiefs will be hoping to avoid a repeat of this season’s turmoil. But just how have the Magpies managed a whopping 40 separate injury issues this term?
MARCH Jamaal Lascelles
Initially tried to play through the pain against West Ham but has now been diagnosed with an ACL injury. Set for surgery and will be out for six to nine months.
Sven Botman
Another to go under the knife for an ACL issue. Injured his knee earlier in the campaign but decided against initial surgery, instead opting to rest.
Miguel Almiron
Lasted just five minutes in the West Ham win before coming off with a knee complaint. A doubt for Everton and the upcoming games.
Kieran Trippier
Has missed out for club and country duty in recent weeks since limping off against Wolverhampton Wanderers in early March.
Tino Livramento
Was injured during the international break and forced off in the win against West Ham United with another ankle issue after being hit with the ball.
Lewis Miley
Came home early from England youth duty with a back injury. Newcastle seeking specialist opinion.
Matt Targett
“Back soon” according to Eddie Howe after an Achilles setback in recent weeks.
Anthony Gordon
Replaced early at Stamford Bridge after an apparent knee injury but recovered in time for his England debut days later.
Harvey Barnes
Suffered a minor hamstring injury before the trip to Chelsea, forcing him out of action until his impressive cameo off the bench on Saturday.
FEBRUARY Martin Dubravka
Missed the defeat by Arsenal through illness as Loris Karius filled in at the Emirates Stadium.
Anthony Gordon
Subbed off at half-time and left St James’ Park on crutches after the 4-4 draw with Luton Town following a blow to his ankle.
Jacob Murphy
Forced out of the clash with Nottingham Forest after pulling up with an issue in the warm-up at the City Ground. Callum Wilson
An unusual chest injury suffered in the closing stages of the Nottingham Forest win that has required surgery. Could miss the remainder of the season.
JANUARY Alexander Isak
Hobbled out of the win over Aston Villa in late January after suffering a recurrence of a groin problem.
Jamaal Lascelles
Picked up a calf injury that kept him sidelined for two weeks in late January.
Kieran Trippier
Missed the New Year’s Day defeat
at Liverpool with a groin problem but was back for the FA Cup win over Sunderland one week later.
Joelinton
Facing a race against time to be fit before the end of the season after thigh surgery. Suffered the injury in the derby win over Sunderland.
DECEMBER Callum Wilson
Picked up a calf injury that kept him out of action for a month. His eventual return was again short-lived.
Alexander Isak
Missed games in the middle of December after suffering a second groin injury of the campaign.
Nick Pope
Dislocated shoulder injury before Christmas leading to Martin Dubravka taking over. Yet to return but is back in light training.
Joelinton
Picked up a hamstring blow against Fulham but returned later in the month after missing the trips to Chelsea and Luton Town.
Fabian Schar
Lasted just 14 minutes against Fulham after leaving the pitch clutching his hamstring. Missed the next outing against Chelsea but returned soon after.
Jamaal Lascelles
Yet another injury for the skipper. Lasted 37 minutes against Luton Town and missed out entirely against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.
NOVEMBER Sean Longstaff
Sidelined with a foot problem in late November and into December. Has been playing through the pain ever since.
Joe Willock
Suffered a recurrence of his Achilles issue in November after working hard behind the scenes. Missed key Champions League games.
Miguel Almiron
Withdrew from international duty after suffering a hamstring injury in Newcastle United’s 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth.
Callum Wilson
A second hamstring injury of the season forced Wilson to miss five matches; four in the Premier League and one Champions League outing.
Jacob Murphy
Suffered a repeat of the dislocated shoulder injury suffered at the end of October. Was forced to go under the knife, missing months.
Dan Burn
Landed awkwardly during Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Arsenal on Saturday and was taken off as a result at half-time. Missed a hefty chunk of the business end of 2024.
Matt Targett
Lasted a matter of minutes against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup and required surgery on his hamstring.
OCTOBER Jacob Murphy
Dislocated his shoulder against Borussia Dortmund. Returned after a few games before suffering a similar fate.
Elliot Anderson
Picked up a back injury that has forced him to miss the majority of the campaign. Returned to full fitness in recent weeks and has impressed in cameo appearances.
Alexander Isak
Suffered another groin injury in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund. Missed key games at home and in Europe before returning before the turn of the year.
SEPTEMBER Joelinton
Asked to come off early during the win over Burnley and missed early Champions League outings with a subsequent hamstring problem.
Callum Wilson
The first hamstring injury of the season for Wilson. Missed games with Burnley, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.
Sven Botman
Played through an initial ACL injury for two games before eventually succumbing to the issue. Decided against surgery but still missed months. Has now gone under the knife for the problem.
Harvey Barnes
A bizarre foot problem that forced him to miss months of action in his first season on Tyneside.
Sandro Tonali
Suffered a minor injury to his thigh while away on international duty with Italy. Would swiftly return before being hit with a lengthy ban the following month.
AUGUST Sven Botman
Ankle injury sustained against Liverpool. Would miss the 3-0 defeat to Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Emil Krafth
Was still recovering from an ACL injury at the start of the campaign. Made his return in October 2023.
