Two tourist information centres are closed down
TWO tourist information centres are to close permanently on the Northumberland Coast. Seahouses and Craster Tourism Information Centres (TICs) will close today, with Northumberland County Council “looking at alternative options” for three part-time staff affected.
The TIC in Morpeth Chantry will remain open, while there are information points in libraries across the county. A statement from Northumberland County Council read: “These changes were agreed in February 2023 in response to changing visitor needs. While these two TICS will not be physically open, there’ll be an ever-expanding tourist information offer across the county.
The Journal understands that Craster Parish Council are aiming to take ownership of the site in their village and are undertaking a feasibility study for the best use of the site.
Ideas under consideration include a social hub, heritage centre, small museum or cafe.
Though the tourist information centre is closing, the public toilets will remain accessible.
Piper’s Pitch, a popular food vendor situated by the tourist information, also will not be affected by the closure. A statement from Craster Parish Council said: “This is a Northumberland County Council matter and we do not wish to make any comment at this stage.”
However, in a Facebook post, they said: “The TIC is an important site, being the gateway to the village, and has already been listed as a community asset by the Parish Council.
“Rather than allowing it to be sold to a third party, we would like to take ownership of it on behalf of the community. As well as securing a village asset it would also help us achieve a number of local, social aims.
“These aims include new jobs, offering a range of services to the community and visitors, making a welcoming social hub, heritage information and establishing a sustainable income stream for the community.
“Accordingly, the Parish Council is in the process of applying for grant funding to carry out a feasibility study.
“It is important that all of the community, including residents and businesses, have the opportunity to engage with this exciting project.
“We will shortly begin a consultation process with all parties.
“The first stage of this process will be an information share and open discussion at the Parish Meeting in May.”
