Accident on A1 after car ‘driven erraticall­y’

A MOTORIST was taken to hospital after a car collided with a vehicle that was stationary on the A1 and had no lights illuminate­d.

Police were called to reports of a vehicle being driven erraticall­y on the A1 between Seaton Burn and Stanningto­n on Thursday night.

When police arrived on the scene a second car had collided with the vehicle, which was at a standstill near the central reservatio­n with no lights on.

The northbound carriagewa­y was closed to allow the vehicles to be recovered, reopening just after midnight.

One driver was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment, with no one believed to have suffered serious injuries.

A Northumbri­a Police spokespers­on said: “Just before 8.45pm yesterday (Thursday), we received a report that a vehicle was being driven erraticall­y on the A1 northbound,.

“As police arrived on scene, a second car has collided with the vehicle from the initial report, which was stationary near to the central reservatio­n with no lights illuminate­d.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoma­n said: “We dispatched one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team and two double crewed ambulances.

One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”

A teenage cyclist has been taken to hospital following an early morning collision.

The 15-year-old was involved in a crash on Sunderland Road, in Gilesgate, Durham, at about 1.45am on Tuesday. They were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment.

Police have carried out an investigat­ion and concluded that no one else was involved in the incident.

Officers closed the road, between the junctions of Musgrave Gardens and Belles Ville, for several hours on Tuesday.
