As a longtime, avid reader of YOU, what strikes me week after week is its powerful message: that women are, frankly, amazing. This issue drives home that feeling in all manner of uplifting ways. From the new generation of fearless funny women showcased on page 34, to the irrepressible Debbie McGee proving that life really can get better with age ( page 40). Then there’s our cover star, Petra Ecclestone. Her personal life reads like the kind of script that a soap opera producer might reject for being far too unbelievable. In the past couple of years, Petra has endured a family kidnapping crisis, a violent attack on her home and a very ugly, public divorce. Somehow, though, it only seems to have made her stronger and she’s pushed on, pouring her energy and enormous wealth into changing the lives of criminally under-served children dealing with autism. But that’s women all over, isn’t it? Forever taking a deep breath and running full pelt towards the challenge. As Kamin Mohammadi shows on page 30, the rewards can be exhilarating. As a fellow reader, I know that it’s these stories of courage and mettle that you love. It’s one of the many reasons I’m incredibly excited to be joining the team as your new editor. I look forward to getting to know you and, with your welcome input, building the magazine that makes Sunday your favourite day of the week.
