But MoS poll shows how May could bowl him out

THERESA May is the only Tory who can stop Boris Johnson following up his stunning Brexit victory over David Cameron by replacing him in Downing Street too – and more than one million people regret voting Leave.

They are among the findings of a post-referendum Survation poll for The Mail on Sunday.

And if the survey is accurate, Mr Cameron may not be the only leader to lose his job as a result of Thursday’s EU vote: a majority of Labour supporters say Jeremy Corbyn should also resign.

The survey contradicts Tories who claim Mr Johnson is a ‘shoo in’ as Mr Cameron’s successor.

When asked to choose between a long list of potential challengers, including Mrs May, Mr Johnson is ahead among Conservative voters, and the public.

But when the choice is narrowed down to just Mrs May and Mr Johnson, she wins by 53 per cent to 47 per cent among Conservative supporters with the two level on 50 per cent among the public.

Under Tory leadership election rules, Party members are asked to choose between two candidates selected by MPs.

The survey echoes reports that some who voted Leave now regret it. A total of seven per cent said they wished they had not voted to quit the EU, equal to around 1,130,000 people. A total of four per cent said they regretted voting Remain, equal to around 696,000 people.

If they could vote again, it would not change the result but it would slash the victory margin from 1.27 million to 400,000.

The survey underlines the damage caused to the Remain cause by Mr Cameron’s failure to persuade the EU to agree to exempt the UK from EU freedom of movement rules. If he had done so, Remain would have won the referendum by a massive 49 per cent to 37, according to the survey.

Survation interviewed 1,033 people online on Friday and Saturday.
