Cancel MPs’ holidays – there’s work to do now

-

With all the change that is going on in the political parties and the process of Brexit beginning, surely the parliamentary recess should be cancelled. It simply cannot be justified. In business, if there is a crisis, more hours of work are needed, not fewer.

Ron Coleman, Dorchester, Dorset Following confirmation of Theresa May as Prime Minister, some people are suggesting that she does not have a mandate and should call a General Election. This is simply incorrect. Prior to the 2015 General Election, David Cameron made it quite clear that if he was re-elected, then he would not serve a third term. He said he would stand down before the next General Election to give the party time to appoint a successor before that Election. This is the basis on which the electorate voted for a Conservative government, and as such Theresa May has a full mandate to govern.

Anthony Taylor, Woodthorpe, York I couldn’t believe Rachel Johnson’s comments in her column last week. How on earth could she contemplate having anything to do with ‘the Goves’ at all, never mind sitting down to a meal with them? If she ever does, I would recommend using plastic cutlery if she doesn’t want to be stabbed in the back.

Linda Cragg, Barrowby, Lincolnshire Contrary to Andrea Leadsom’s views, I believe that having had no children will be an asset to Theresa May’s premiership. She has become a more widely read, deeply knowledgeable and cultured person than she would have been with children to look after. Jon Smith, Surbiton, Surrey Is it cynical of me to think that Nigel Farage has resigned as Ukip’s leader so he can accept a lordship from the new Prime Minister?
