FRANKIE’S HIGHLIGHT

Frankie Dettori (below) was a 16-year-old apprentice when he rode his first British winner on Lizzie Hare at Goodwood in June 1987. So it would be appropriate if he can ride his 3,000th winner there next week. He needs seven more for the landmark and he will have a clutch of big rides. His best mounts will include Classic winner Galileo Gold and twoyear-old Mehmas.

MILE’S BETTER

Wednesday’s £1m Sussex Stakes looks like being the one of the best mile race of the season. Three Classic winners — Awtaad (Irish 2,000 Guineas), Galileo Gold (English 2,000) and The Gurkha (French 2,000) — meet again after Galileo Gold came out on top in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Jersey Stakes winner Ribchester and older horse Kodi Bear are likely runners.

STAYING POWER

The racing public loves a staying horse and Michael Bell’s Big Orange has a growing fan club. The five-year-old looked better than ever when winning the Princess of Wales’s Stakes and tries to win Thursday’s Goodwood Cup for the second season running.

BLUE’S THE COLOUR

Charlie Appleby’s two-year-old Blue Point looked special when cruising home at Doncaster last time. He is in for a more serious test in Thursday’s Richmond Stakes.

ALL IN THE MINDING

With wins in the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and Pretty Polly Stakes, Aidan O’Brien’s filly Minding has laid down strong claims to be considered as Horse of the Year. She chases a fourth group one prize of the season in Saturday’s Nassau Stakes.
