GOOD VISUAL HEALTH
BOOK REGULAR EYE CHECKS
Regular eye checks – every two years, for most people – with a registered ophthalmologist are essential for good eye health, because any issues can be detected, often before you, the patient, experience any symptoms. They don’t just test your sight, but look for signs of other problems such as glaucoma, cataracts or even diabetes.
KEEP SIGHT OF YOUR DIET
A healthy, balanced diet, packed with vitamins and minerals, especially carotenoids (found in squash, spinach, papaya, watermelon, carrots, grapefruit, oranges and apricots, among other fruit and veg), is vital for healthy eyes and may help prevent some conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, too.
SLEEP TIGHT
Your eyes not only benefit from rest during periods of sleep, but your body gently cleanses away irritants such as dust and smoke as you slumber.
WEAR YOUR SHADES
Protect your eyes from harmful UV light by wearing sunglasses or having Polaroid lenses fitted to your spectacles so they darken when you head outdoors.
LIGHT FANTASTIC
When you reach the age of 60, you’re not only three times as old as you were when you were 20, but you need three times more light to see clearly, too. Use direct lighting for close work such as reading or sewing, and allow as much daylight into your home as possible.
KEEP ACTIVE
A healthy circulation and oxygen intake are crucial for eye health, both of which are boosted by regular exercise.
