Ashwin has much more than spin

- By Stephen Davies

RAVI ASHWIN, the off-spinner pushed into India’s top six for the first Test against West Indies, powered to a third Test century — and has vowed to keep his place in the line-up.

There were eyebrows raised when Ashwin walked out at No.6 for the first time but he responded in style with a classy 113 as India piled up 566 for eight declared in Antigua.

‘I’ve always wanted to bat in the top seven for the Indian team, which is a longtime goal,’ said Ashwin.

‘I only found out I was batting there at the start of play. But now I plan to stay there.’

Virat Kohli scored 200 — featuring in a stand of 168 runs with Ashwin — as India batted West Indies out of the match.

Seamer Mohammed Shami then turned the screw on the third morning with four quick wickets as West Indies subsided to 92 for five.
