Astonishing moment the ‘bunny boiler’ murderer was arrested in her bed

- By Nigel Bunyan

THIS is the dramatic scene when ‘bunny boiler’ murderer Sarah Williams was arrested for the ‘almost demonic’ slaying of love rival Sadie Hartley.

Sitting bolt upright in bed after being abruptly woken by the five officers sent to detain her at 3.10am, only the ski instructor’s head and shoulders are visible above her hisbiscus-patterned duvet.

PC Jane Davies, who can be seen here telling her she is under arrest, would later tell Williams’s trial that at that moment ‘she appeared dazed and confused’.

Williams’s first movement is to nervously flick her hair. Then her mouth lolls open and she places her hands flat on the duvet. Her look of vulnerability in the moments that follow is in complete contrast to the ‘ice maiden’ countenance she perfected during her seven-week trial at Preston Crown Court.

Last week, Williams and her accomplice, Katrina Walsh, 56, were jailed for life for killing Mrs Hartley. Consumed with jealousy after her relationship with firefighter Ian Johnston broke down and

he rekindled a romance with Mrs Hartley, Williams attacked her love rival with a 500,000-volt stun gun and stabbed her 40 times at her home in Helmsmore, Lancashire, on January 14.

Justice caught up with her three days later and the scene was caught by a team from TV production company Raw Cut TV – making a documentary about Lancashire Police for ITV – who were given access to the investigation. Moments earlier, they had seen the officers smash down the front door of Williams’s house in Chester and storm up three flights of stairs to her bedroom. Inside, they would find crucial evidence linking the 35-yearold to the killing of Mrs Hartley, 60.

Another clip from the film shows lead investigator Det Con Bryony Midgely, giving her view of Williams’s personality. ‘She’s a psychopath,’ she says simply.

Steve Warr, executive producer of Raw Cut TV, said: ‘We were privileged to get the inside story of the investigation and the story that evolved is stranger than any crime drama.’

The Murder Of Sadie Hartley is on ITV on September 1 at 9pm.
