Trott’s a one-day wonder as Warwickshire triumph

- Bob Treasure

THE STAGE was set for two of England’s latest call-ups to show their worth, but it was international old boy Jonathan Trott who took the plaudits as Warwickshire beat Surrey by eight wickets in the final of the One-Day Cup.

Spinners Zafar Ansari and Gareth Batty — both named in England’s touring party for next month’s ODI and Test series in Bangladesh — did not manage a run between them as Surrey were skittled for 136. And a wicket each for Ansari and seamer Stuart Meaker did little to delay Warwickshire’s inevitable charge to victory with nearly 20 overs to spare.

A magnificent performance from the Warwickshire attack did the damage to Surrey and it was an unbeaten 82 from Trott that saw his side make amends for their final loss to Durham in 2014.

‘If there’s one bloke in world cricket that I’d want to knock off a small total it would be Jonathan Trott,’ Warwickshire captain Ian Bell said, while Trott himself took a moment to reflect.

‘When you’re getting to the end of your career you want to put in performances and have memories to take with you,’ the 35-year-old said.

Surrey got off to a good start, with Jason Roy and Steven Davies putting on 35 in five overs, but Chris Wright claimed the prize wicket of Roy for 24 thanks to a sublime reaction catch from Laurie Evans.

Bell then turned to spin and was instantly rewarded when Ateeq Javid had Davies stumped off his first ball — a loosener down the leg side.

Kumar Sangakkara and Rory Burns dug in, taking Surrey towards the 100 mark, but Sangakkara’s attempt at a booming drive off Oliver Hannon-Dalby saw the Sri Lankan caught behind with the total at 99.

Then came a collapse that saw Surrey lose eight wickets for 37 runs, with Ben Foakes and Ansari departing for ducks at the hands of Hannon-Dalby and Jeetan Patel, while Batty was bowled through the gate by Chris Woakes.

Warwickshire were already 40-0 in reply when Ansari dismissed Sam Hain, and Bell’s departure at the hands of Meaker had no effect on the masterful Trott, who took his side over the line with his fifth 50-plus score of this year’s competition.
