Europe so weak that America could win by five points, predicts Miller

- By Derek Lawrenson

IT IS A team containing three former world No1s, two current major champions and the Olympic gold medallist … but America’s leading analyst thinks it ‘the worst European Ryder Cup side for many years’.

Former Open champion Johnny Miller said: ‘Look at Europe and you don’t see a lot of players who you have much confidence in. Even Lee Westwood; how many putts does he make under pressure? Chris Wood — who knows? Thomas Pieters has a good game for Hazeltine but he might melt under pressure. When you take Ian Poulter out of this team it is like tearing its heart out. The US could not only win — it could be by about five points.’

US captain Davis Love (above) names his final wild-card selection this evening and Bubba Watson delivered a ‘remember me?’ yesterday with a thirdround 66 at the Tour Championship, albeit one delivered from well off the pace of the leaders.
