Helen Mirren: Why I’m so glad my childhood wardrobe was just one dress... and a school uniform

- By Ben Ellery

SHE is one of Hollywood’s most glamorous actresses and has turned heads on the red carpet wearing an array of dazzling dresses.

But Helen Mirren has revealed her happiness as a child when her wardrobe extended to just a school uniform and one dress – and how she is thankful she didn’t face the same anxieties over her appearance that young people do today.

Dame Helen, 71, said: ‘My sister and I were talking about it the other day. I said, “Can you believe how we grew up, Kate, and the difference with the world now?”’

‘She said, “Yes, we had our school uniform and one dress, and I am so grateful for that.” It must be so difficult for kids nowadays with the attention on what you are wearing and how you look and what bag you are carrying.’

Dame Helen also revealed how she cried after the notorious 1975 interview with Michael Parkinson in which she gave a frosty response when asked whether her ‘assets’ got in the way of being a serious actress. She said: ‘I remember leaving that interview and crying on the way home, thinking, “Oh my God, I blew it. I didn’t know how to handle it, what an idiot I am.”’
