TOP TIPS
WHEN CHOOSING RETIREMENT LIVING
The fastest-growing group in society is the over-60s, with 11.6 million people aged 65 or over in the UK. Deciding where to live in later years takes a lot of consideration. If retirement living seems like an option for a loved one, or even yourself, here are our top tips to help you make the right choice.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
Age UK’s Housing Choices pages (ageuk. org.uk/home-and-care/housing-choices) are a good starting point on practical factors to consider, such as finances and accessibility needs, now and in the future. The internet is your first port of call when researching retirement living providers. Make a list of those that appeal, and read any testimonials and FAQ pages.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
‘Suss out’ the local area. Is it close to a post office, supermarket or bank? What about transport?
WHAT ABOUT PETS? AND BILLS?
Find out the policy regarding family and friends staying over, and whether pets are allowed or not. Ask if there is a service charge and what it covers, and who is liable for repairs.
SEE FOR YOURSELF
Book in for a visit to get a feel for the environment. Ask to meet residents and find out what social activities are on offer.
