Clash of the titans
WITH England looking to secure a world record 19th successive win, a second Grand Slam under Eddie Jones and British & Irish Lions places up for grabs for both sides, the last game of this year’s Six Nations is set to be one of the very best.
Next Saturday in Dublin, the Irish will like nothing better than to spoil England’s party and here Sam Peters looks at the key match-ups which could decide the outcome of the match.
KEITH EARLS v ELLIOT DALY
Earls toured South Africa as a precocious 21-year-old in 2009, but he has taken longer to mature than originally anticipated. Now 29 and in the form of his life, the Munster man will face a tough test against England’s multi-talented utility star Daly, who is enjoying a superb first Six Nations and has every chance of touring with the Lions.
JOHNNY SEXTON v GEORGE FORD
With Owen Farrell expected to continue at inside centre, Ford against Sexton is set to be a fascinating match-up between two of the most attacking-minded flyhalves in the world. Both men love to play close to the gain line, bringing runners on, but Sexton has looked beaten up and could struggle if targeted.
JAMIE HEASLIP v BILLY VUNIPOLA
The old warrior against the young pretender, Heaslip has been around the block countless times but seems to keep going. At 24, Vunipola is moving into the prime of his career and, assuming he starts, could give England the edge with his ability to get the gain line.
CJ STANDER v MARO ITOJE
Blindside flanker Stander is one of the world’s form players and his carrying ability could be a thorn in England’s side. Itoje has been consistent out of position on the blindside flank, but his work-rate and defence are top draw.
RORY BEST v DYLAN HARTLEY
Neither captain has reached top form but are key leaders and fierce competitors. Both teams will need a rock-solid set piece and leadership under pressure will be key to which side comes out on top.
