3 ways to beat... BRITTLE NAILS

-

PREVENT:

Weakened, crumbling or breaking nails are a common problem but are rarely a cause for serious concern. It is normally a result of long-term exposure to the elements, or to chemical products such as detergents.

The latter, in particular, can strip nails of their natural oils and make them weak. To prevent damage, make sure you wear gloves when doing the dishes or cleaning.

TREAT:

Brittle nails are a sign of a lack of moisture, and it’s often to do with ageing.

As we age, the body is less able to hold moisture, so be sure to use a hand cream or similar regularly.

Boosting levels of Vitamin D – either through sun exposure, with dietary supplements or foods like fatty fish or egg yolks – can aid the body’s absorption of calcium: a key nutrient for healthy nails.

If you believe that brittle nails are caused by a medical condition, such as a fungal or skin infection, you should visit a pharmacy where a professional can advise you on the most appropriate treatment.

DON’T BOTHER:

While using a colourful varnish can temporarily thicken the nail, using removers to eventually strip the polish will weaken your natural nails.
