Profit such a shallow measure of film fame

-

IN EVENT magazine’s interview with Scarlett Johansson (left) last week, it was said she is ‘the most successful female actor of all time’, since her films have grossed £2.8 billion. But this success has been gauged purely in financial terms and is attributable to inflation and today’s extortionate cinema ticket prices. It is not comparing like with like: her predecessors’ movies may have achieved greater success in their day, and also by less objectively definable criteria such as influence and talent. What about Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth or Sophia Loren? F. Harvey, Hotwells, Bristol Does Scarlett really think she is qualified for public office in America, as she hinted at in her interview? Have I overlooked her many years of service? While her intentions in taking a stand against Donald Trump and his attitude to women may be admirable, surely she should leave the politics to those qualified to oppose him – people who have been educated in relevant matters and who have done more than simply attend a few dinners at the White House.
