Upstairs, downstairs

They are an oft-neglected area of our homes, but staircases run through the heart of them. Just because they are functional doesn’t mean they shouldn’t reflect your style in the same way as any other part of the house.

A plethora of stylish ideas for staircases is now available, so it’s something you should consider if you’re redecorating your hallway or undertaking a bigger property renovation. Spending a bit of time and energy bringing yours up to date will ensure it creates wow factor in your entrance hall and reflects the look you are going for elsewhere.

Options for solid-wood made-to-measure staircases are endless, from ash to maple, walnut and oak finishes. Think about choosing wood that matches the timber elements in the rest of your house to create a cohesive look.

A cantilevered staircase can create a dramatic look in a modern interior – or why not push the boat out with a spiral staircase?

If your current structure is solid, then think about bringing your staircase up to date with new banisters or a bespoke handrail.

Says Sophie Robinson: ‘I think your banisters need to link in with the architecture of the building – so if you have a very modern house, look to use sympathetic materials.’

If space is at a premium or you are after a contemporary look, consider a glass-panelled staircase. These are better at letting in the light for north-facing hallways. Metal balustrades can also add character. Think about creating a new look by painting your existing woodwork.

‘Personally I like to see the old turned spindles, especially in period properties,’ says Sophie.

‘The big trend is to use statement runners in either a bold colour, or, better still an eye-catching geometric or stripe pattern. Keep the rest of the décor neutral and then go for a bright. Try Roger Oates, Alternative Flooring or Crucial Trading for some eye-catching designs,’ says Sophie.
