Birthday winner for the beaming Queen
THE QUEEN enjoyed a late birthday present yesterday when her horse Call To Mind won at the races – a day after she turned 91.
The world’s oldest and longestreigning monarch was spotted beaming with delight as she watched the horse romp home as the winner of the Dubai Duty Free Maiden Stakes at Newbury, Berkshire. Wearing an electricblue wool coat with a matching hat, black gloves and a black bag, she was seen congratulating jockey Ryan Moore and chatting to her racing manager John Warren and trainer William Haggas. The Queen received an owner’s award and is also understood to have picked up more than £5,000 in prize money.
The three-year-old thoroughbred, sired by famous Irish racehorse Galileo that won the Epsom Derby, the Irish Derby Stakes, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2001, was favourite at 6/4. Her Majesty spent her birthday quietly at Buckingham Palace, where a band of guardsmen played Happy Birthday during the Changing of the Guard.
The Queen traditionally celebrates her birthday privately, but she also has an official birthday in June when she attends the Trooping the Colour parade.
