Chappell fights to avoid looming court case
DOMINIC Chappell, who bought BHS for £1 from Sir Philip Green, is battling to fend off an impending court case brought by the Insolvency Service, which is demanding evidence he insists has already been seized by another Government department. Chappell claims HM Revenue & Customs, which is conducting a tax investigation related to the collapse of BHS, took all his files during a raid in November.
A spokesman for Chappell said: ‘The Insolvency Service has been given the full list of documents and computers that HMRC took – that is to say everything. Money is being spent and wasted for no reason.
‘We are in continual contact with the Insolvency Service and hope the court action will be dropped before the court date on April 27.’
The Insolvency Service declined to comment.
Chappell is also under investigation by the Pensions Regulator and is assisting Parliament and administrators to BHS and other subsidiaries with their inquiries.
It is one of two looming court dates for Chappell. On Friday, Duff & Phelps will attempt to force Retail Acquisitions, which bought BHS for £1, into insolvency.
Sir Philip Green and Chappell blame each other for the collapse of BHS.
