A wasted chance to outsmart EU
HOW grateful Theresa May must be to Jeremy Corbyn. His 1940s Labour manifesto is so nostalgically red that it makes her bright pink return to the Left-liberal days of Ted Heath look at least vaguely conservative.
But the most important parts of her manifesto are these: first, she is free to raise taxes, pretty heavily, in the emergency Budget that will come when the current credit bubble (this time based on car loans) pops. Second, she is now wholly committed to leaving the European Single Market. I’m amazed at this. Staying in the Single Market gives us some power over our borders, and a huge amount of independence. It may also be the best, if not the only way of outsmarting our EU former partners. Wait and see.
