Health COMMENT

- By Dr Ellie Cannon

WE ARE big BGT fans in the Cannon household, and loved Julia’s audition. My children, Lottie, 13, and Jude, ten, were intrigued when she told the judges she had scoliosis, sparking a conversation about the condition, and we were all blown away by the passion in her performance.

As many people know, scoliosis causes the spine to curve and twist. What is less well known is that it’s not simply cosmetic: as Julia explained, it can be painful.

Currently, we offer the brace that Julia has, simple painkillers and the option for spinal fusion surgery. Julia’s mum was absolutely right to encourage her to exercise, as this is great to improve strength and reduce pain.

It is clear that dancing and gymnastics are not simply a hobby for Julia, but a significant part of her life that have maintained her selfesteem and mental wellbeing despite the trauma of her illness. I can understand her desire to find a treatment that will allow her to continue.
