Chilling echo of the Stasi in schools

- Rosemarie Lawani,

I read Peter Hitchens’s account last week of how children in our schools are being indoctrinated and my blood ran cold. These teachers must have been reading a Stasi handbook.

It reminds me of what happened to my aunt in East Germany in the 1950s. My father’s family are from a town in eastern Germany and after the war they ended up trapped behind the Iron Curtain. My father, meanwhile, was brought to England as a prisoner of war and stayed here.

My aunt worked in a kindergarten in Saxony, and in 1953 my father sent her a postcard with a picture of the Queen at her Coronation. She showed it to the children in the kindergarten and told them about her brother in England and the Royal Family. The following day, she and my grandparents were questioned about her loyalty to the East German regime. In 1957 she managed to escape to West Germany, where she still lives.

One can only pray that when the children in these schools become adults, they will realise that their teachers were trying to brainwash them.
