£100M FOR FAILURE

- By Nick Harris CHIEF SPORTS NEWS CORRESPONDENT

CHELSEA’S Premier League title win will be accompanied by a record financial victory off the pitch as prize money of £150 million-plus is confirmed this week.

And Sunderland, who are set to register the sixth worst Premier League points tally EVER, will still bag £100m in prize money. Of the five previous lower tallies (among 506 teams across 25 years) two of the others were also ‘achieved’ by... Sunderland.

Title winners Chelsea, bankrolled by £1.053bn in loans from Roman Abramovich, will be the clear fiscal winners ahead of Tottenham, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Mail on Sunday’s forecast on these pages indicates the sums the 20 clubs will receive from central league funds but the precise amounts could yet differ by millions per club depending on where they finish.

If all clubs finish in the same places they start today, we expect Chelsea to collect about £153m, City about £149m, Tottenham and Liverpool £148m and Arsenal about £143m.

Each club receives a share of domestic TV income, foreign income and commercial deal income and then differing amounts based on finishing position and times shown live on TV.

These totals will be ratified in the coming days but our table provides a guide, give or take a few million.

As detailed elsewhere on these pages, Manchester United are set to make about £144m this season in Premier League prize money — and become the first club to surpass £ 1bn in prize cash in the 25-season history of the league.

The ‘ equal share’ of money received by every club is expected to be about £84.4m, comprised of varying sums from overseas rights, domestic rights and central commercial deals with league partners.

Each club gets about £1.92m per place in the table from that sum for Sunderland to 20 times as much for Chelsea.

Clubs also get varying amounts based on the number of times they have been live on TV in the UK. We estimate Liverpool will get about £31m after appearing in their 29th live league match of the season today — a record for a single season.
