Toblerone out on its own? It’s not any more...

- By Harry Wallop

IT IS a move that will have chocolate-lovers spluttering over their favourite treat.

High street chain Poundland has launched a new triangularshaped bar in direct competition with one of its own biggest-selling items – Toblerone.

But instead of featuring the iconic 14,600 ft Matterhorn on its red and gold packaging, the Poundland version focuses on a small hill… in Shropshire.

Called Twin Peaks, the Poundland bar is made in Birmingham and features chocolate triangles with double points, left, to differentiate it from its famous rival. The surprise move follows the decision by Toblerone’s makers, US food giant Mondelez, to reduce its bars from 170g to 150g.

Mondelez added extra space between the triangles of Toblerone, famed for its 1990s slogan ‘out on its own’. Now Poundland has retaliated by coming up with its own version, weighing a mighty 180g but still costing only £1.

A Poundland insider said: ‘We were really hacked off by Toblerone. We weren’t consulted about the reduction in size, and what’s worse, some customers blamed us for it.’

Tina Locklin, Poundland’s senior confectionery buyer, said of its new bar: ‘It’s named after The Wrekin, near our head office. But The Wrekin hardly trips off the tongue, so we went with Twin Peaks.’

Mondelez did not comment.
