Russia feast on Kiwis to lift president
UNDER the watchful gaze of Vladimir Putin, Russia were helped on their way in the Confederations Cup by the feeble contribution made by the champions of Oceania, though the victory provided an indication that their re-modelled, homebased team has potential.
The 27-year-old striker Fedor Smolov, top scorer in Russia for the past two seasons, was the outstanding contributor with his deft touch and physical presence.
Dmitry Poloz, a Rostov midfielder, was the effective linker of play. Yuri Zhirkov, who left Chelsea in 2011, was showboating by the second half — juggling the ball down the left touchline.
The opener was an owngoal by defender Michael Boxall. Smolov made and finished the second and Putin clapped: that was key.
