Wenger in bid to keep Giroud and Chamberlain

- By Mike Keegan

ARSENE WENGER will battle to keep Olivier Giroud at the Emirates — and has insisted Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is going nowhere.

The France striker has interest from Borussia Dortmund and is considering his Arsenal future following the arrival of £52million record signing Alexandre Lacazette.

But his manager has declared he wants the 30-year-old to stay.

Wenger, who also ruled out a move for Monaco wonderkid Kylian Mbappe, was full of praise for Giroud, who scored the first goal as Arsenal earned a 3-1 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers in front of 83,000 people at ANZ Stadium.

‘There’s a lot of speculation but no matter how many times I say it, I have a huge respect for him,’ he said of Giroud.

‘Even with the speculation he is focussed and he does his job. I want him to stay.’

Giroud, meanwhile, says he is relishing the prospect of teaming up with Lacazette.

‘Alexandre is a good player,’ he said. ‘We had the opportunity to play together a little bit for the national team and hopefully he will settle in the English Premier League. I’m still an Arsenal player and want to play well for the season.’

The Frenchman was on form in Sydney, finishing a Nacho Monreal cross before Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny made it three before half-time.

Steven Lustica scored Western Sydney’s only goal.

Wenger was forthright on the future of Liverpool target Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The midfielder has a year left on his contract but Wenger says he will remain with Arsenal.

‘One hundred per cent I expect him to stay,’ the manager added. ‘No matter what happens he will stay.’
