Scholes in Kane’s sights as he targets 15 goals

- By Rob Draper

HARRY KANE has surpassed the amount of goals scored by Ian Wright in his England career and equalled Paul Gascoigne’s total after hitting five goals in the past three games — but has set himself the target of getting past Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham.

With 10 goals in 20 appearances, including vital strikes such as the equaliser against Scotland and the first against Malta, Kane is establishing himself as the talisman in this team.

And, having hit double figures, he is targeting 15 goals for England, which would put him one ahead of Scholes and four ahead of Sheringham.

Asked about surpassing Wright and matching Gascoigne, Kane said: ‘It’s massive. They were two amazing players, Ian Wright was an amazing goal-scorer and everyone knows what kind of talent Gazza was.

‘That was my 10th goal and 10 out of 20 isn’t a bad ratio so hopefully I can keep that up.

‘It’s about setting little goals, so five goals, then 10 goals and 15 next. That will be good. There’s no rush.

‘It’s tough to score in international football so I’m happy to get to 10 and hopefully I’ll get to 15 as soon as possible.’

His goal-scoring flurry means his international ratio is now similar to his Tottenham goal-scoring rate and Kane said: ‘It’s just a case of being a bit more experienced at this level. That was my 20th cap on Friday so it’s just a case of getting used to playing with these players.

‘When you play for England, you’re going to get more chances and it’s just a case of taking them. I’ve felt sharp all season to be honest and I knew if I got a couple of chances on Friday I’d take them and that’s what happened.

‘When you’re a striker everyone kind of looks to you for the goals so I’m happy to be there and happy to get those goals, get the important goals.

‘If anyone else can score it’s great as well as it was on Friday.

‘It’s a normal feeling. As a player, as a striker, people expect you to score and I’ll carry that burden and I’ll relish it, and it gives me confidence when I do score.’

And given his annual goal-scoring drought in August — Kane has never scored at senior level for Tottenham or England in the opening month of the season — the striker revealed that the change of month meant his team-mates anticipated him scoring against Malta on September 1.

‘A few of the lads had a laugh saying it was September 1,’ he said. ‘It’s strange it falls on that date but it’s great to be on the scoresheet and hopefully it will kick-start the season.’
