‘Anyone who pays more than £9.99 for a handbag must be soft in the head,’ wrote one female letter-writer last week, questioning whether a man is ever attracted to a woman because of her handbag.

Does she think all women spend money on clothing only in order to interest the opposite sex?

I dress to please myself, have several stylish bags and like to look smart, even when alone. It is important to me to look my best.
